Three years and four days ago, I took maternity photos for my beautiful sister in law. She has a lovely prairie behind her condo that was the perfect setting for a session, with the added advantage that we didn’t have to travel anywhere! I thought it would be fun to recreate the photos with her daughter in the same location at the same time of year. I was so surprised to see the difference in the landscape, the weather, and my style! We had a pretty nice day for the maternity photos, with more sun and drifting clouds. For the mommy and me photos, it was cold, overcast, and a totally different feel. Something I do now that I didn’t do then, is adapt to the conditions. I used to try to make everything look the same, no matter the weather or lighting. I’ve learned that it’s much better to embrace what we are given, and show the day as it really was. ALL weather can be beautiful, you do not need a perfect sunset (or even sun at all) to get great images. The land behind her home also looks different from 2015. The shape of the trees has changed a little, and the grasses are much more trampled and colorless due to our cold, wet spring. We worked with it all! Enjoy the comparisons, and the rest of this beautiful session.
* Sara Hilton wrote this blog post about mommy & me photography Palatine to encourage moms to get in the pictures! Moms are usually the ones taking the pictures, and we deserve better than cell phone images. Sara is known for beautiful outdoor photography, but also loves lifestyle sessions inside client’s homes. Sara lives in Palatine, Illinois with her family: a husband who loves fishing and can’t wait for summer, a five year old son who eats all day long, and a 2 year old son who loves his mommy so much she can’t get anything done.
