As an artist who works hard to create the most beautiful images possible for my clients, I cannot stress enough the importance of printing your family photos. And not just printing photo books (although, that is a great idea!) or small prints for your desktop and bookcases, but printing large wall art. All of the images I deliver can be printed as large as a billboard if desired, so the bigger the better, in my opinion! Some experts believe that having large wall art of your children in the home can boost their self esteem, and make them feel like an important part of the family. Everyone has a 50+ inch tv, but mostly 8×10 photos of their kids on their walls! I decided last year to start printing bigger portraits of my kids, and also print more photos in general. I had this great shot of my boys that I wanted to print large for my lower level family room.
I thought a 20×30 would be great for above the couch, so I was pretty disappointed when it looked laughably small resting on top of our huge couch!
Since I was already stuck with the frame, I found a more size-appropriate spot for it on a different wall.
I created this little coloring nook in the family room so the kids can be doing something creative while the adults are adulting. I think it’s a great spot for a happy image like this, with bright colors and big smiles to inspire them. I know they remember how fun that day was, they didn’t stop running or laughing for hours! I love that I could capture that for them.
Because I was so surprised at the scale issue, I decided to invest in some Photoshop mockup files to better illustrate how sizes appear on our wall. Here is a great example of how the sizes compare above a smaller-size couch.
A 30×40 would’ve been much better to fill the wall space above our sectional, and you can see how you really need to do a gallery wall if you are printing smaller sizes. Speaking of gallery walls, those work wonderfully to display lots of photos and art, especially in awkward spaces like stairways, front halls, and narrow walls. Here is my very favorite spot in our house, the stairs going up to the main living area:
I had a lot of small sizes already printed, and knew I wanted a variety of frames mixed with art. This wall came together pretty quickly after I picked my art pieces and did a mockup of possible frame sizes on the wall with craft paper. I know my boys love seeing them as they go up the stairs, they often look at themselves and study the differences between their younger selves and today. I also have many other photos displayed in the house, but they are no bigger than an 11×14 – and I plan to change that!
While I’ve always offered a print credit to encourage clients to get professional prints of their images, I’m happy to announce that I am going to start offering wall art design services for every order that contains a 16×24 or larger print! I can use general mockups that are customized to your décor colors, or I can use an actual photo of your space. Here are a few mockups of possible displays as examples. This first one is a 20×24 center image, matted with black frame, with four matted 8×10 images surrounding it.
And here is a 30×40 landscape canvas with a 20×30 portrait canvas next to it.
This one is a wood framed 20×30 with a thin mat, and two 11×14 canvases on the right side.
Here is an example using a real life photo. This is my own guest room, with a 16×24 canvas mocked up above the bed. As long as I have the dimensions of your furniture, I can do this for you to choose the best size prints for your space!
One more actual room, my family room with two framed and matted 20×30 prints above the couch. I may still actually do this, if I can find the right frames and mats!
Hopefully this post gives you some ideas for how to display your photos. Please contact me if you need any help with past or future print orders!
